Since Tik Tok’s launch in 2016, it has accumulated over 1,000 million users and has become a worldwide phenomenon. Tik Tok has become one of the most popular social media websites in recent years. It became especially popular in 2020 during the Covid pandemic because it gave people an entertaining online space to fill their time. According to Cloudflare, Tiktok was the most popular website of 2021 and it is continuing to become increasingly popular. As many consumers are spending copious amounts of time on Tik Tok, this gives businesses an opportunity to use it as a powerful marketing tool.
Tik Tok is a popular application among young adults that consists of dancing videos, comedy videos, tutorial videos, and much more. Due to the app’s simple design, users end up spending numerous hours scrolling through different videos. Tik Tok has gained so many users in a short period of time due to the opportunity to become famous on the app. Many users that started out making dancing videos for fun on the app have gone viral and made a name for themselves not only on the app, but outside of the app as well. Tik Tok has an algorithm that compiles videos that a user might enjoy on their “For You Page” based on videos that they have previously liked. Entertainers on the app are able to use the algorithm to determine what videos will land on the most For You Pages and gain the most traction. Additionally, Tik Tok has made it relatively easy to gain a following which has led to an increase in users in the past several years. As creators gain more popularity, brands are willing to pay large sums of money for sponsored posts on their pages. Charli D'amelio is the app’s largest creator with over 140 million followers. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Charli most likely charges a minimum of $100,000 per sponsored post on Tik Tok. Due to her large following, brands are willing to pay such a large amount of money for a sponsored post, since it will reach many users quickly.
With Tik Tok’s growing popularity, businesses are beginning to take advantage of the large number of users on the app by using it as a marketing tool. While Tik Tok is primarily used to create and view light hearted videos, businesses have begun to enter the space to create short videos informing users about their brand. Many businesses such as, Chipotle, Guess, and RedBull, are using entertaining on-air talent to create funny videos in order to grab users attention and spread awareness about their brand. Since Tik Tok is mostly aimed toward younger audiences, businesses with products that pertain to this audience would benefit the most from using Tik Tok as a marketing tool.
Although Tik Tok began as an app to make users smile, the app can also be used as a powerful tool in the business world. Tik Tok provides businesses with the opportunity to grow a following and make their products a popular household name. As the world shifts to using social media apps, such as tik tok, more frequently in their daily lives, it is necessary for businesses to use these apps as tools to continue to grow their brand.
